There are a lot of questions people have when buying or selling a home, but one of the most common ones is “Who pays the commission fee?” Whether this is your first time buying or you’ve purchased before, this question can still trip up many buyers and sellers in the market. It pays to know the answer so you can confidently navigate the buying or selling process. Your friends at Bradberry Garner Real Estate are here to answer your questions!
Most often, the seller will pay the commission fees for both the selling agent and the buying agent. The buyer will pay closing costs. Sometimes, the seller will include the price of commission in the asking price for their house. This means those fees can be passed on to the buyer. Be sure to ask your local Crystal Coast realtor (us!) if you have any questions about the process and be upfront with what you’re comfortable with!
Learn more about home buyingGenerally, commission in real estate is five or six percent of the sale price, although some agents may have a higher commission. This percentage will be split, with half going to the buyer’s agent and half to the seller’s agent.
It’s easy to think that the whole percentage is going to your agent, but don’t be fooled! Your agent will pay for advertising, office expenses, sign rentals, and other business-related costs with that commission.
Your realtor will generally only be paid if you sell your home or buy a property, but always read the details of your contract to be sure. Should your contract expire and your home not sell, you most likely will not be required to pay the commission. Exceptions may occur if you back out of a sale after accepting an offer or other extraneous circumstances present themselves. If you have questions about who pays the commission and when or are looking for a local real estate agent, contact our team of real estate specialists.
