Taxes in Carteret County

Property tax in Carteret County is determined by assessing the value of all property in the most recent county-wide appraisal. The last appraisal took place in 2015. The next reevaluation will take place on January 1, 2020. Tax bills are mailed out in the summer each year, and while taxes are due on September 1, payments may be made without accruing additional interest through January 5th.

When buying a home in Carteret County, property taxes will usually be prorated at the time of closing. While taxes may not be due at the time of your purchase, you can always ask that the taxes be paid at closing. The county will also accept pre-payment based on the previous year’s taxes.

Carteret County’s tax rate is currently .31, and you can find specific town tax rates for locations along the Crystal Coast on the Carteret County Tax site.

Motor vehicle registration renewals will be sent by the Department of Motor Vehicles and will combine vehicle property tax with your renewal fee for a quick and easy one-stop payment system.
